VALUES SECTION 1

Action 1 – Ranking individual values in order of importance

This step will assist you in identifying, and then ranking, your 20 most important values in order of importance. Start by downloading and printing the list of values and the values worksheet.

  1. Your first step is to identify your “top 20” values. Use the list of values to stimulate your thinking. Add your own if you wish. Step one is to compile a list of the 20 values that you hold most dear. For now, simply identify your top 20 values – do not attempt to prioritise your values yet.

  1. Next, transfer your top 20 values to the values worksheet, in random order. List your 20 most important values against each letter of the alphabet along the top of the diagram marked Figure 1, A - T. No particular order is required.

  1. Repeat these values in exactly the same order, along the left side of the diagram so that A on the left is the same as A at the top, etc.

  1. Once all the values have been written down, compare value A at the top of the diagram with value B to the left of the diagram and decide which one of these two values is the most important to you.

  1. Write the letter of that value (A or B) in the blank box where A & B meet. (TIP: Many people make the mistake of writing the first letter of the value down at this time. For example, say “A” is Family, and “B” is Money... and let’s say their choice is the Money, then they’d make the mistake of writing the letter “M” in the blank box where A & B meet. Wrong! In this example, they should write the letter “B” in the blank box.)

  1. Continue comparing value A at the top with the values C, D, E, through to T on the side, so that you would have compared value A with each of the other values.

  1. Repeat the exercise with values B - T along the top, until you have compared each one of your values with each of your other values.

  1. Now count the number of times that each letter appears and write the total against its letter in the table marked Figure 2, in the total column.

  1. Finally, allocate a priority ranking, where 1 is the value with the highest total, and 20 is the value with the lowest total.
