At the very highest level, leadership is about influencing other people to become independent of you in their pursuit of a common vision. When this is accomplished, people take responsibility for their own actions, thus becoming empowered to take independent action.

This demands that people learn new behaviors – which is most effectively accomplished through mentorship. But people will only allow themselves to be mentored by a leader who cares for them at the deepest level- they don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care... and genuine caring is manifested by how we behave towards our people. When we build relationships, they can feel that we care... and when we become their mentor, they feel that we care at the deepest level.

This gives rise to yet another challenge: to be an effective mentor you first have to be a good model. Our behavior displays the essence of who we really are... we are the showcase of both our character and our competency.

We only become a worthy role model when we live a life of authenticity. When there is congruency between what we think, what we say, and what we do.

So, in the deepest sense, leadership is not simply a role that we play in isolation from the rest of our life. It needs to be congruent with the rest of our life!

The challenge then, is not to become a good leader... but to be a master of the self.
