PARTICIPATIVE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Stef du Plessis, is one of SA's leading resources when it comes to teams and team development. Now joined by Dr Bernaas Swanepoel, previously Professor of African Languages, and a leading expert in the area of multi-cultural teams (particularly in the South African context), they have made available for the first time a compilation of their favourite experiential learning activities for in-house use in organisations. These activities and instruments will equip teams with tools and techniques with which to effectively overcome the challenges facing winning teams, and will assist your teams at all levels in their quest for Peak Performance.

WHAT IS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING?

An Experiential Learning Activity (ELA) is a "self-learning" experience, equipping teams with tools and techniques with which to achieve their common goals, and building a solid foundation of mutual trust and respect through adult learning principles. Suited to all levels of the organisation, experiential learning is fun and participative, and can be facilitated by the team itself.

Energising and empowering individuals to understand and use their full potential, experiential learning transforms groups of people into closely knit, focused teams that are equipped with practical, immediately implementable team strategies. It visibly illustrates the power of the team, and helps teams to develop single-minded purpose.

The process will also bring about an understanding that each individual has to participate and make a contribution in exchange for the privilege of being on the team. In addition, these activities will help participants to characterise and distinguish between the different types of influencing behaviour; reflect on their personal behavioural tendencies, and will help the team to consider the nature of roles within a team. Teams will create an environment in which the can learn to communicate more effectively, make decisions; solve problems; get things done; deal with conflict, and maximise diversity.

ELA's are not physically demanding adventure experiences, yet these activities are stimulating learning experiences, even for the adventurous. Well suited to all ages, genders and levels of physical fitness, these activities create a non-threatening environment in which team members can experience whether they are pulling together, or pulling apart...

ELA's can also be structured as Simulated Corporate Games, in which case they can simulate typical organisational information flow that would typically require the collection and transmission of information through several stages: from conceptualisation; through planning and instruction; and finally through to implementation - and even follow-up.

WHAT IS THE BUILD-A-TEAM ELA KIT?

The Build-A-Team ELA Kit is a ready to use compilation of 10 indoor and outdoor experiential learning activities, complete with all of the materials and instruments required, and includes a comprehensive and easy to follow Facilitators Guide. Each Build-A-Team ELA Kit caters for groups of six to 25 participants.

The activities are designed to teach skills for the development of critical team-play areas like: leadership & teamwork; group communication & negotiation skills; group problem solving & decision making; planning; dealing with conflict; managing diversity, and ultimately, developing trust. The activities will also highlight the importance of these areas, relative to the specific team, and diagnose the current level of development of these critical areas.

Each activity facilitates a specific learning outcome, while at the same time reminding participants that we only win if we all win ... bringing about an understanding of the fact that "not one of us is as good as all of us".

When using experiential learning for adult education, it is imperative that teams are kept small, so as to ensure individual participation and effective learning for all involved. That's why our Build-A-Team ELA Kit includes two complete sets of equipment every activity - allowing for two teams of up to ten each per set of equipment. With each team employing up to two observers, plus a facilitator, the total number of participants per is 25. The time required for each activity ranges between 30-minutes and three-hours.

The comprehensive Facilitators Guide gives a full overview of every activity (including full colour photographs illustrating how to set up and use each instrument). The manual provides an easy-to-use approach - complete with a step-by-step description of the flow of each exercise, as well as a user-friendly debriefing for each activity - thereby enabling any team to effectively facilitate their own activities, whilst ensuring an effective learning outcome.

A basic one-day or advanced three-day Peak Performance Accreditation Programme is however also available for the professional trainer and facilitator. The course offers a one-day introduction to Experiential Learning, and can be followed by a further two-day advanced accreditation programme which will ensure that the maximum benefit and learning is derived from the Build-A-Team ELA Kit.

Packaged in two durable, easy to handle containers, both transportation and storage are easy. The kit includes all of the materials needed for the activities, and requires no maintenance. There are also no consumables that will need replacement after every use.

Our Build-A-Team Experiential Learning Activities have been used by an impressive list of local and international companies - ranging from small start-up enterprises, through to leading corporations, across the broad spectrum of both business and public sectors.
